From prehistoric settlements to the Byzantine and Ottoman past, the history of Kalambaka is intertwined with the region’s unique geology and religious significance.
The first traces of human settlement in the area can be traced back to the Paleolithic era, about 50,000 years ago. The unique landscape of the area, with its towering rock formations, offered natural protection and shelter to the first inhabitants.
During the Hellenistic period, around the 3rd century BC, the ancient city of Aeginio was founded in the area, which served as an important strategic and commercial center. Aeginio, which is believed to have been near present-day Kalambaka, was conquered by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. and later became part of the Byzantine Empire.
